This thesis, Through Grief to Joy: A Good Mourning, provides an approach to the mourning process as it applies to the losses in life that are not necessarily obvious or immediate. Case histories are presented to which is applied a therapy strategy that focuses on uncovering a past primary loss and connecting it with losses in the present. Special attention is given to how and where persons are stuck in the mourning process. the approach used is based on the precepts established by Sigmund Freud, Wilhelm Reich, and Alexander Lowen. Therapy sessions are described, as is the specific therapy strategy. the findings are that individuals who come for therapy are in some way blocked in the flow of the five major emotions: anger, fear, grief, compassion, and joy or satisfaction. In order to unblock this flow, a resolution of mourning must take place. When the major inhibitors--anger and fear--are released, grief can be expressed and the person can move on through compassion to joy and satisfaction. There are four characterological ways of identifying loss: loss of self; depression; anger, frustration, and humiliation; and denial. It is also seen that individuals suffering in any of these four characterological ways had lost, in some way, the love, support, or presence of one or both parents--often in a past too distant for them to recall or think important. the conclusions drawn from these findings show that an energetic body-mind therapy is valid in helping individuals resolve blocked mourning and in putting in motion the five major emotions.
